What is travel insurance and what does it cover?
You’re about to book your trip to England to walk around London, and catch a soccer match in Liverpool. Then, your travel agent asks you if you might want to take travel insurance for this trip. Not even a half second has passed and you’ve already said “no,” thinking the odds are in your favor.
If we’ve learned anything from Katniss Everdeen is that the odds are almost always not in our favor. Learn the 3 basic types of travel insurance you should be covered for before you go on your next trip.
- Medical Emergencies
Most people that already have health insurance believe themselves to be protected against medical emergencies and medical evacuations. This is true . . . if they remain in the U.S. Outside of the country, it’s hard to say. Most policies do not cover medical expenses outside the country, and can end up costing you tens of thousands of dollars.
- Cancellations
This is the primary concern with most travelers. Typically, an airline might give you a $7 voucher for breakfast after you’ve spent over $1,000 on your family trip. If your trip is cancelled, or you succumb to illness or injury, or a variety of other covered reasons, you will be reimbursed for your trip.
- Lost Bags, Delayed Bags, Delayed Flights
These coverages are for your belongings. You trust the airline to remedy the situation should they misplace them. More often than not, bags are found, but if not, at least the airline gave you a $7 breakfast voucher!
Baggage delay coverage provides money to buy essential items until your bags are found and given back to you.
Travel delay coverage if your flight is delayed it will provide reimbursement for extra hotel nights and meals.
Baggage Coverage If your baggage is lost, stolen, or damaged, this coverage will reimburse you.
