Mental Health Tips for Coronavirus and Social Distancing

Protecting your mental health throughout the pandemic.

The pandemic is an unprecedented time for us all. We may be inundated on how to keep our families and ourselves virus-free. Yet, a key item on the list – social distancing – poses challenges to our mental and emotional wellbeing. To help you navigate these unchartered waters, here are a few tips to consider.

Establish a routine. Routine provides structure and purpose. Make sure you know what you’re doing and when. Don’t forget to schedule in enough time to exercise every day.

Think about the regular activities that are most important to you. What are the important elements to these? Can you adapt them and carry them out in the home? For example, instead of going to an exercise class, take a class online to stay in your routine.

Take care of yourself. Eat and drink healthily with plenty of fruit, vegetables, and water to support your immune function and energy levels.

Avoid sitting still for too long. Exercise and regular movement are key to maintaining fitness and strength. If you are working from home, take breaks away from your desk often.

Talk with friends, family, and neighbors. Although you may not be able to spend face-to-face time with them, you can still connect with your community and loved ones. Call, text or video call people to stay connected and offer support to others.
