The latest on health care.
The New Year has seen major headlines for health care across the nation. The year started with a lawsuit threatening the entire Affordable Care Act and failed action to crack down on drug prices and medical bills which was promised in 2019. To help keep you informed, here are a few health care fights to watch for throughout the coming year.
- Drug Pricing
The prices of drugs was supposed to be an area for potential bipartisan action in 2019. However, the effort ran into a brick wall of industry lobbying and partisan divisions. However, there is a substantial push to finally get legislation over the finish line in 2020.
- Surprise Billing
Another major health care initiative that Nancy Pelosi (Democratic, California) says she wants is to protect patients from surprise medical bills. Unfortunately, her efforts have also fallen prey to intense lobbying and congressional infighting before. Advocates have a battle on their hands – they must overcome competing plans and lobbying from powerful doctor and hospital groups who worry the legislation could lead to damaging cuts to their payments.
- Medicare for All
In the Democratic presidential race, “Medicare for All” is a central diving line. How this issue plays out in 2020 will depend in large part on who wins the Democratic nomination. If progressives like Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren win the nomination, Republications will be able to go all out on their attacks that private health coverage would be eliminated under the proposal.
