How to Get Sleep During the Holidays

Finding time to hit the hay during the holiday season is everything but simple, but there’s a way you can you catch some ZZZs this holiday season.

Between finding the perfect holiday present to meeting end-of-year deadlines to entertaining the guests to the myriad of holiday to-dos, finding some time for sleep can be all but impossible. Unfortunately, your brain and body need rest in order to remain healthy. If you think the holidays will cause you to lose sleep, here are a few ways you can counteract that and get sleep during the holidays.

  1. Reminder: Sleep Is Important
You won’t enjoy all the glee the holidays bring if you don’t get the right amount of sleep. Becuase you are about to put a heavy burden on your body, you actually may need more sleep to cope with the coming holiday weeks.
  2. Leave Your Stomach Alone an Hour Before Bedtime
The holidays are times of big meals and heavy drinks. Alcohol can wreak havoc on your sleep cycle, so it’s recommended that you lay off the booze and food one hour before you go to bed.
  3. Leave the Stress Behind
With the schedule of tomorrow being so hectic, it can be easy to take stress into bed. Relax with a good book or calming bedtime ritual before your head hits the pillow.
  4. Don’t Pick Up Your Devices
The blue light emitted by your phone, TV, or laptop slows the production of melatonin, the hormone that tells your brain and body that it’s time for bed. Leave your devices on the nightstand and do your best not to pick them up.

The holidays are a great time to spend with family and friends, make sure you get the right amount of sleep. Not doing so could lead to severe (but recoverable) stress. Contact the insurance professionals at Donald Weiss Insurance Services in Santa Monica for all of your health care needs throughout Southern California.
