How to Store Your Most Important Documents

Keep precious documents safe by storing them in the right place.

Think about all of the important documents you have on your possession. Your will, birth certificate, marriage certificate, diplomas, insurance policies. These are the documents you will want your kids or other beneficiaries to have access to someday, and it’s definitely worth ensuring they are well protected. Below are just a few good ways to store your most valuable documents safely.

Fireproof Safe

Ideally, your documents will be stored in a fireproof safe. Once inside, they are easily accessible for you and your loved ones. This makes them easy to access in a pinch but not easy enough to steal or get damaged. That said, there are a few reasons why a fireproof safe should not be your only location for essential files. Documents in the safe are still at risk of theft, and it may be harder to organize your files if the safe is small. Remember to check the fire rating for at least a 125-degree safe to keep documents protected.

Safety Deposit Box

If you have more than a few items to store, it’s a good idea to turn to the professionals. A safety deposit box is highly secure, often located in a bank, and ideal for storing valuables. In most cases, the bank will give you a key or require ID and a signature to access what is inside the box. While they are almost immune to theft and damage from natural disasters, they are often forgotten about. This means that documents are rarely accessed (not ideal if you need your passport number quickly) and many insurance policies do not stay up to date with current needs.

Secure Online Storage

With new developments and apps, the internet is becoming a useful and secure place to store important information. A great advantage of digitizing your documents and storing them online is that you can access them at any time. It’s also easy to share access with family members or advisors. In addition, they move with you throughout the years and you can keep them up to date. Since they are online, they are also immune to dangers like fire and natural disasters.

That said, choose the storage location that works for you. It’s important that you take care of your documents to that your loved ones have access to your information and plans.
