National Nutrition Month is a new awareness month to deal with nutrition: the thing with which Americans struggle.
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics created National Nutrition Month in an effort to raise awareness about the food you put in your body. The U.S. is amongst the heaviest nations in the world and that’s due to poor health and a terrible sugar-based diet. But with the right facts about nutrition, anyone can get their health back on track and live a long healthy life. Here are a few things you should know about National Nutrition Month.
History
March 1973, the Academy of Nutrition of Dietetics launches National Nutrition Month as public health decreased and public interest in nutrition rose. It started as a week-long event but became a month-long awareness event in 1980 once people had developed a real interest in nutrition.
2017 National Nutrition Month Theme
This year, the NNM theme will be “Put Your Best Fork Forward.” This will serve as a reminder that each one of us has, in our hands, the tools required to make healthier food choices. These tools include the internet (with viable sources) and our brains. Making small changes during NNM and beyond can, over time, help improve health now and into the future. Academy members can help spread nutritional information throughout the public and gradually shift the public toward healthier eating habits by promoting NNM activities and tips throughout the month of March.
