Disability may come without a moment’s notice, but what does the standard disability insurance cover?
You work hard to build a full life for yourself, so it’s only natural that you’ll want to protect that way of life. You’ve already protected your car, your home, and your family from the unexpected consequences of life, but what about your income? If you were suddenly unable to work because of an injury or illness, would you be able to maintain your present-day lifestyle? How long until your savings run out and you can no longer pay the mortgage or bills? Short term and long term disability insurance can help protect your financial well-being by replacing lost wages if an illness or injury impedes your ability to work.
Short Term Disability Insurance
You receive benefits after a period, usually up to 2 weeks. You are then covered for the length that was specified in your policy, which can range from several months up to one year. It usually covers:
- A disabling injury
- A lengthy illness
- The birth of a child
Long Term Disability Insurance
Like short term insurance, this covers injuries and illness that prevent you from working. It does not, however, cover childbirth. But it does provide care for illnesses and disabilities from which it will take many years to recover—if at all. Benefits usually take longer than 2 weeks to be dispersed (usually around 90 days), but the benefits can continue until you reach the age of 65, or until you–hopefully–recover. It covers things like:
- Injuries/poisoning
- Cardiovascular/circulatory disorders (heart attack, coronary artery disease)
- Musculoskeletal/connective tissue disorders (back pain, osteoarthritis)
- Cancer
- Mental disorder
