What You Should Know About Short Term Health Insurance

Short term health insurance can give you access to the coverage you need.

Short term health insurance is meant to provide health coverage during temporary gaps in your coverage. Early retirees, recent college grads, and people who are in between jobs most commonly choose short term health insurance. When you invest in a short term health insurance policy, you are able to choose the duration of your policy.

Unlike health insurance policies that meet the minimum required amount of coverage under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), short term health insurance plans have special exclusions and limitations. Unlike ACA health plans, short term health insurance plans allow insurers to:

  • Exclude coverage for certain benefits that are considered essential under the health care reform, including mental health services and substance abuse treatment.
  • Deny your coverage due to a preexisting health condition.
  • Put the cap on the dollar amount of the benefits that you are able to receive.
  • Refuse coverage renewal when your policy ends.
  • Charge deductibles that are above the out of pocket limit for ACA plans.

There are no government subsidies that are available to help cover a portion of the cost of short-term health insurance plans. Short-term health insurance plans are not able to be purchased through any type of government exchange. Instead, insurance companies will sell then through brokers or websites or directly to consumers.

The coverage that is provided by short-term health insurance plans, as well as coinsurance and deductibles will vary greatly from insurance company to company. Similar to traditional health insurance plans, most short term health insurance plans have medical provider networks.
